Why I can’t be in love with you…

It’s because I am white and you are not
Because my family has history and yours does not
It’s because my religion says I am going to heaven and your not
It’s because my father was rich and yours was not
It is because I wear the latest fashion and you shop at Wal-Mart
It’s because I went to business school and you majored in art

You want to know why I can’t love you…
It’s because my mom said so…
Its cause my society told my mom to say so

Society broke us up
I am white your black she is red he is blue
I descend from I dead guy, you descend from one too
My religion says I am going to heaven, so does yours
Our dads made money; it’s just that mine was before yours

You want to know why I can’t fall in love with you
It’s because I can’t see you suffer
My mom and my family
All they will put you through…
Money, color, status and race
They don’t matter to me
They don’t matter to you
But if we want to live in this world
We have to sacrifice our love
For my mom and her diamond earrings
And yours with all her bling blings
For my dad who went to Princeton
And yours who rubbed shoulders with Clinton
For your grandmothers botox injections
And mine’s tummy tuck and hidden imperfections

You want to know why I can’t be in love with you
It is because all that I was taught growing up has no value
In the material world that we live in
It is really simple
It’s what is in my pocket
And your wallet
That what makes the world go around
And that is why I can’t love you
Because what is in my wallet and what is on my passport
What’s on my ID and the degree that hangs on my office wall
You know what keeps me form loving you, Paper
Simple pieces of paper
